Like clockwork

Sure enough, the first of the redbuds is flowering as scheduled at the start of April. Set over thirty-six years in this garden, the timetable is that redbuds (Cercis canadensis) flower April first and dogwoods (Cornus florida) the tenth. Yes, there are variations by days and occasionally weeks, usually earlier after very mild late winters. No doubt, Barbara (my wife) quickly tires of my lengthy analysis to explain why.

This spring, no conversation is required. Just enjoy, and I’m certain Barbara won’t mind at all. No doubt, I’ll ramble on about something else.

Timing of flowering is different on the road just up the hill where earlier blooms confirm that temperatures must be a degree or two warmer and with a more open exposure. Still, the rule is that redbuds come first and dogwoods follow a week or ten days later.

Of course, the blooms are glorious, but as I’ve added to redbud and dogwood collections, I’m anxious for colorful leaves to emerge. You’ll hear back from me as soon as they’re out.
