After three weeks of horrid summer temperatures it seems a miracle that anything in the garden could be alive, much less flowering and looking splendid. But, of course, the gardener knows that plants are sturdier than that, and even at the end of an August notable for too many days over ninety, and too few days with rain, the garden shows few signs of the harsh weather.
Gordlinia will flower through August into September. The early exit of Japanese beetles in the garden greatly improves the flowering display.
The challenge for the gardener through the month has been to gather enough energy to get out into the heat, but in this garden there is sufficient shade to escape the afternoon sun. Plants also benefit from a break that comes in late afternoon as the sun slips behind tall cryptomerias and bald cypresses.
Several toad lilies begin to flower in August, but most flowering is in September. Foliage has been spoiled on the few plants in full sun, but with a bit of protection from the afternoon sun there are no problems.Othello ligularia flowers in dry ground just above one of the garden’s pond. While it prefers damper soil, this spot is shaded , and Othello does not suffer the dry ground.Autumn Twist Encore azalea is the most dependable rebloomer in this Virginia garden. It often begins to flower in late August, with blooms extending through September.The purple passionflower vine continues to grow and new flower buds appear daily.The foliage of Worcester Gold Blue Mist shrub fades in August’s heat, but flowers are plentiful and uneffected by the extended heat.Sunshine Blue Blue Mist shrub flowers several weeks later than Worcester Gold.Mountain mint will continue in bloom through September.
