Some plants with yellow foliage just look sick. Others look great through the cooler spring, but fade horribly in the heat of summer. In any case, I suppose that yellow foliage should be used in moderation, and certainly there are superb gardeners who would not stoop to plant anything with a yellow leaf. On the other hand, I am not too good to plant anything that catches my eye, and if it’s overdone, what do I care? So long as it suits my eye, I’m happy.
Though the list of plants with yellow foliage in this garden is long, they are spaced far enough apart that I don’t think it’s distracting or overly bright. You might, but it’s not your garden, and you should choose as many or as few as you prefer in your space. No doubt, there are many more plants with yellow foliage than I’ve planted, but you’ll agree that this is an excellent start.
There are more, but now, I suspect this is quite enough yellow for one sitting.
I didn’t quite realize until I strung them end to end, how many yellow plants there are. And there are more. Still, there many, many plants in the garden that are green, red, blue, or some color other than yellow, so they don’t stand out quite like they do when they’re all on one page.
There are so many trees in this garden that it’s difficult to photograph any more than small areas at once. Also, the wider the angle that I photograph, there’s always something in the shot that I would prefer not to show to the world. I think this all looks worse to me than it would to anyone else, and I expect this how most gardeners would feel. Occasionally, I’ll slip in a few wider views.
Dave, I totally understand your views (wink) on panoramic.. I too have views that I hope will not show up too.. unless there’s a really good reason to see my wheelbarrow leaning against my birch tree or my homemade compost bin.. But, your plants are really amazing, and thank you so much for sharing the beauty of yellow..
I have imposed a ‘no more yellow foliage’ rule for my own garden. There’s too much as it is and I’m sure it falls well outside the good taste barrier. Unless I find an Ogon, I still need that one… and annuals don’t count of course… and I hear there’s a more vigorous golden moon maple version out there, I would have to find room for that as well… and I would have to try ‘celestial shadows’ if I found it 🙂
Yes, we are weak. Some folks claim (in fact, all but me) that there is no more room in this garden, but if I am able to find a ‘Bihou’, yellow twigged Japanese maple I will have no choice but to find a prime position for it.
Oh my I just love all that yellow in your garden.. More power to ya..
Take care and happy gardening to ya, from Laura

It’s Gold Standard hosta and Pineapple Sage in my garden. The color-changing hosta really brightens up the shady area.
