More right than wrong

Inarguably, errors are to be found in the garden. Many somethings are too close to another something and there are clashes of color and one variegated leaf beside another. But, there is much more right than wrong. Of course, I  am the gardener and also declaring this verdict, so make your own judgment.

A garden that pleases me might repulse you, but most importantly, the garden must please its owner. I favor trees, so I’ve planted dozens, and then added shrubs and perennials to fill. I adore Japanese maples so there are several dozens, but also numbers of redbuds and dogwoods and a bunch of others. The garden sits beside a forest, but the forest has been extended to cover the entire property.

While aspects of the garden shine in each month, it is May when the whole of the garden is brightest. This is the time when flowers blend with the fullness of foliage to enclose areas so that a scene is unveiled around each corner. Yes, I’ve seen it before, many times, but each time there’s something new in new light.

Most probably, I’m simple-minded, delighted by the smallest pleasures of the garden. A single leaf, or bloom. A trillium that appears far from its parent plants, or a Japanese Painted fern that grows in a gap between path stones. Much of what’s right in the garden is accidental, a result of happy plants doing what they’re supposed to do. But, added up, there’s little that’s wrong and much that’s right.

Love all your posts and pictures every time. We have a similar design or lack thereof that we add to whenever we see something we like. So far it’s about a half acre. We have ten and most will be natural.
